Subject-Verb Agreement
Subjects and verbs must agree in number.
Rule 1
Sometimes the verb comes before the subject. Make sure that they agree in number. (This includes questions).
Rule 2
Compound subjects that are joined by ‘and’ usually use a plural verb.
Rule 3
Indefinite pronouns are automatically singular or plural. The singular ones are the -one, -body, and -thing verbs as well as other special cases (one, anyone, everyone; someone, nobody, anybody, everybody, somebody; nothing, anything, everything, something; each, neither, either). The plural verbs are several, few, all, both, and many.
Rule 4
Who, which, and that’s number depends on what they are referring to.
Rule 5
Either/or and neither/nor uses the verb that agrees with the subject closest to the verb.
Trick 1
Cross out all prepositional phrases and other irrelevant information in between the subject and the verb. These are just unnecessary information.
Trick 2
None can be either singular or plural; it does not matter which version is used unless part of the sentence determines the number. Some is can also be either singular or plural; if what it refers to can be counted, then it is plural. If what it refers to cannot be counted, then it is singular.none can be either singular or plural; it does not matter which version is used unless part of the sentence determines the number.
